Lesson 2 Ministry Helps Workshop

Prayer Team, Alter worker, Usher and Helper

Each person can do more than one job if he chooses. Tonight we will go over the basics of each of these jobs. Think and pray about how you might like to serve God. Pray and ask God how He wants to use you, then be sensitive to the how the Holy Spirit might be directing you. In the up-coming lessons, we will be discussing different methods of ministering using the various arts.

I. Prayer Team:

A. Overall good hygiene

1. Clean hands that smell good
2. Fresh breath
3. Clean neat clothing

B. Counsel

1. Find out what their prayer needs are.
2. Have they been born again?
3. Are they where they need to be with God?
4. Be as sensitive as possible when talking with people.
5. All information you receive while counseling is private and not to be discussed.

C. Prayer etiquette:

1. Lay your hands gently on their head.
2. Never push.
3. Keep your eyes open to be aware of your surroundings and the person you are praying for.
4. Be sure a “catcher” is behind them especially if the Spirit is moving strongly.
5. Pray quietly, but so the person you are praying for can hear you.
6. It is best if guys pray for guys and girls pray for girls.
7. Be careful where you place your hands. Do not touch the stomach or private areas. Laying your hands on the head, shoulder or top of their back is best.
8. Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
9. Trust God to minister to them. It is God who does the work, you only do the praying.
10. If someone falls out in the spirit, knell down and finish praying for them quietly, then move on to the next person. Let them soak in God’s presence.
11. If you are manifesting God’s presence too strongly, you should let someone else take over and you go and enjoy God’s presence.
12. Always come to services prayed up and in right standing with God.
13. Come to service 20 minutes early to pray with ministry team.

Those who choose to be on the prayer team will attend a training session for more detailed training to help them be comfortable with praying for others.

II. Alter Work

1. Booklets (demonstration)

• If someone accepts Christ as their Lord or if they are a new Christian give them our Happy Birthday! booklet.
• Fill in their name and that days date in the back for them.
• Give them a bible if we have some available.

2. Decision Cards

• Fill one out for every new convert or rededication – they may fill it out if they want to and you check to be sure you have all the information. Most will want you to do it for them. Print. Make sure it can be read. Pay especial attention to numbers that they are readable.

3. Modesty blankets: Demonstration

• With out disturbing the person soaking before the Lord, place a blanket over any modest part of their body that may be revealed.

III. Usher: welcome, help and control

An usher’s main objective is to see that the service or event goes on with the smallest amount of hindrances. Satan will try to cause all kinds of distractions to keep God’s work from being done. He will cause people to distract during preaching because He doesn’t want people to hear the truth of God’s word. He knows that truth sets people free from Him.

Other times when you must be extra watchful of disturbances are 1.) during worship 2.) during prayer and 3.) during alter time. He will try to use people during these times to keep people from entering into God’s presence because he doesn’t want them to be ministered to. He knows that, God is changing people’s lives. It is very difficult for the speaker or worship leader to deal with these distractions. It is an usher’s job to keep distraction to a minimum and do it as kindly as possible.

Ushering in the park is a little different in that there will be many distractions that we have no authority over, like cars going down the road or people coming into the park and talking or parents screaming for their kids to come home. These things, we just have to ignore or deal with through prayer. However, you do have a measure of authority over those that come to take part in our meeting, even in the park. You can ask kids to be quiet and respectful or leave our meeting area. Mostly, however we use incentives like quiet prizes to control in outdoor events.

It also is the usher job to be friendly and welcoming to people who come to the service or event and to be helpful with whatever is needed.

Ushers should:

1. Dress neatly and modestly. You represent Jesus and Chosen Explosion. We may provide a staff or Usher T-Shirt.
2. Exercise the authority of the ministry, being careful to do it with humility and kindness.
3. Be watchful of what is going on and take care of whatever needs taking care of.
4. Be friendly, smile.
5. Be a team player. Communicate closely with other ministry workers.

(Instruction and demonstration)

During a service if kids are misbehaving, try to catch their eye, motion for them to be quite or behave. If they don’t, go to them and tell them quietly and politely but with authority. If they still don’t, remove them from the service so they will not continue to be a distraction. Do this by saying: follow me. If they don’t take them by the arm and gently guide them.

If you are a youth and the problem is an adult. Go to an adult leader with the problem. If ever you feel a problem is over your head, go to another leader for help.

(Leader, have a question and answer time and close in prayer.)
