Pathways to Freedom
Lesson 9
We know that when Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead, those that put their faith in Him gained the ability to walk in freedom from all demonic holds or curses. That was God’s role in our freedom. We have leaned that we also have a role to play. With our words, in faith we must exert our authority over demonic forces. Today we are going to look at ways that Satan and his demons have holds in our lives through various curses and how we can walk in freedom from those holds.
As we go through these curses and how to break them, the prayers are mainly for your knowledge and to prepare your heart and mind for deliverance. At the end of Pathways to Freedom, those taking this class as part of a group will go through group deliverance together, actually praying all of the prayers and expelling whatever demons may be giving problems. For those taking this course alone on-line, lesson 12 is a self-deliverance step-by-step manual. In the meantime, let the Holy Spirit minister to you in what ever way He will. Truth sets us free. John 8:32 says, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (MKJV)
Having any dealing at all with the occult is sin and a major door opener to demons. The occult consists of, but is not limited to, black and white magic, witchcraft, wizardry, casting spells, palm reading, psychic readings, crystal ball readings, pendulum readings, divination, telling the future in any way other than by the Spirit of God, séances, all yoga activity, transcendental meditation and seeking spirit guides, roll playing games and involving yourself in the occult through video games, movies, television shows or in any other way.
The occult should be avoided at all cost. It is a spiritual plague and an abomination to the Lord. When we play with the occult, we are playing directly with demons. That is not a smart thing to do. They do not have your best interest at heart. They seek to destroy you. Having occult dealings invites them to go ahead and have their way with you, and they will!
This door is opened either by your activity or the activity of your ancestors. Because the occult is so prevalent in our society, everyone should break any holds that have come as the result of occult activity.
Sample prayer of freedom: Holy Spirit, I ask you to bring to my mind any occult related sin. (Out loud or in your mind to God, name them as you think of them.) Father, I repent of any and all occult activity in my past. I am truly sorry and will never do such things again. I also ask you to forgive my ancestors (mother, father, grandparents, etc) for all occult activity that they may have committed. I forgive them for their involvement and any problems that their involvement might have caused me. Thank you Lord. I receive your forgiveness. Satan, I renounce your hold on my life. I do not belong to you and I want no part of you. I now command all demons that have entered me as a result of the occult to leave me now in the name of Jesus. Lord I ask that you heal me, repair all damages caused by these demons and by my involvement with the occult. In Jesus name I pray, Amen
Words are very powerful. The world was created by God’s words. Our words are also very powerful. With our word’s we can loose God’s blessings in our and in others lives and with our words we can bring curses into our own and others lives. Without even realizing it, we can give Satan and his demons invitation to invade and torment us. An example of this is to say things like, “my grandpa had heart disease and I will probably have it too.” Demons are behind many sicknesses and when we proclaim sickness on ourselves we are inviting demonic activity. We must use our words to resist demonic activity in our life. There is much more to be learned about our words and demonic activity. I recommend you study more deeply in this area.
Not only do our own words affect us, but other people’s words can also bring curses upon us. We all have had negative, hurtful words spoken to us and about us. These words can be an inroad for demonic activity and strongholds in our life, for example a parent calling a child stupid or worthless. We can break these curses and get rid of all the demons they have allowed in.
Sample prayer of freedom: Father, please forgive me of any words that I have ever spoken to others that hurt them. Please help them to be set free from the destruction of these words. Lord, I forgive others for the hurtful things they have spoken to me or about me. I ask you to also forgive them and to bless their life. Satan, I renounce your hold on my life, I cast every negative word spoken to or about me to the ground as ineffective and I command all evil spirits that have tormented or invaded me as a result of word curses to leave me now in the name of Jesus. Father, please cleanse me and heal me of all soul wounds and pain caused by these words. Restore me to complete physical and emotional health in the name of Jesus, Amen. Thank you Lord.
Unforgiven sins committed by our ancestors, dead or alive, can affect us. Demons may have a right to our family line because of sins committed by our ancestors but not repented of, for example; incest, alcoholism, drug additions, cult or occult activity, sexual promiscuity or perversions to name a few. These evil spirits may torment us in many different ways including strong desires to commit certain sins, sicknesses and diseases, voices, tormenting thoughts, night terrors, mental illnesses, etc.
Demons also may have spiritual legal rights to us simply because they gained rights to our ancestors through different means and our ancestors never did what was necessary to break the curse so that it would not continue into another generation. They probably didn’t do anything about it because they did not have the spiritual understanding to know that they could. Remember, God’s people are destroyed from a lack of knowledge. Knowledge empowers us. When we learn that it is demonic activity that causes a particular problem that we have and that we have spiritual power and authority through Jesus, we can break the generational curse so that it will not be carried to our own children and we can break all demonic holds on us and cast all demons out. Thank God, we don’t have to put up with our enemy. We have every tool we need to put an end to his activity in our and our family member’s lives!
Sample prayer of freedom: Father I love you and commit my life to you today in a greater way. I want to please you. I want to be free from all the holds of the enemy so that I can serve you more fully and faithfully. Lord I confess to you today that I forgive my ancestors of sins committed against you that have caused me trouble or pain. I ask you today to forgive them of all sins. (Confess any particular known sins in your family history) I ask you to bless my living relatives. I ask you to bring them into a relationship with you.
Satan I renounce your hold on my life. I break any and all generation curses upon my family now in the name of Jesus. (Name the curses if you can, for example alcoholism or incest) I command now that all demons that have gained control in my life due to the sins of my ancestors leave me now in Jesus name. (Name specific spirits if you are able to, for example demon of mental illness or demon of heart disease) Father I ask that you cleanse me and heal me from all wounds caused by these demons. In Jesus name, I pray. Thank you Lord for setting me free.
Any sin may give demons legal rights to invade us. Forgiveness is a key to freedom from demonic forces, God’s forgiveness of us and also our forgiveness of others. We must truly be sorry of all sins that we have not previously repented of. We must confess these sins to God and ask His forgiveness with the attitude of not committing them again. If we do not have this heart and attitude, successful deliverance is not possible. Sins dealing with the occult and sexual sins are particularly dangerous and volumes could be written about their danger, but I want to take the opportunity to warn of the dangers of pornography because of the tremendous availability of it through the internet.
Pornography is at everyone’s fingertips these days with the advent of the World Wide Web. People, even Christians may think it is harmless and that no one will know. First, God knows and second the devil knows. When you look at pornography, you are inviting all kinds of demons to invade your being. These demons can drive you to lust to the point of ruining a healthy sex life for you forever. Many men that are addicted to pornography are not even interested in normal sexual relations with their wife, which ruin their marriage and destroys their family. Looking at pornography also will allow demons to enter that will drive you to lust for all kinds of perverted sex, others will enter that will cause you to do things that you would have never thought you could do, like molest, rape and even murder. Pornography is not harmless; it gives demons the right and the ability to destroy our life. All sin works in this same manner. This is why God doesn’t want us to sin. He loves us and wants to protect us.
Sample prayer of freedom: Father forgive me of the sins of ________ . I am ashamed and will never do these things again with your help. As an act of my will, I also forgive and release myself from this sin. Please set me free from all demons that have entered me as a result of this sin. Satan, I renounce you in the name of Jesus, I want no part of you ever again. I command _______ spirit to leave me now in the name of Jesus. (Name them if you can) I command all related demons to go as well. Satan, God has forgiven me and you no longer have any rights to me. Go now in Jesus name. Father I ask that you completely deliver me and heal my body, soul and spirit. Thank you Lord. In Jesus name I pray.
Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show you any unrepented sin. Ask Him to reveal what demons have entered or are causing you problems as a result of your sin. You should deal with one sin and one spirit at a time until you feel you have covered everything. Speak directly to each spirit, telling him that he has no rights to you and commanding him to go, in the name of Jesus.
Just as we hurt others, other also hurt us. We have already covered words spoken to and against us. People also do sinful acts against us, maybe an act of betrayal or rejection. Perhaps someone has physically hurt you by an act of abuse, molestation or rape. Maybe someone has stolen from you or committed some other act that has hurt you. Many times hurtful acts committed against us open the doors of demons to us. In order to cast these demons out we must forgive all offenders.
I know this is very difficult but we must forgive those that hurt us. Jesus said in Matthew 6:14-15 for if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. (Matthew 6:14-15 MKJV) and in Matthew 18:21-35 Jesus warns us that those of us that have been forgiven by God (born-again) must forgive a person unlimited numbers of times or else the tormentors (demons) would be loosed on us. This is because our unwillingness to forgive them gives demons legal rights to us.
You don’t have to feel the forgiveness to actually forgive someone. Years ago I struggled with this when someone that I loved hurt me very deeply. I hated this person for the pain they had caused me. When I come to realize that I had to forgive her I made up my mind to do so but thought that because I did not feel the forgiveness, I had not forgiven her. Therefore; I wrongly asked God for two years to help me forgive her. Actually, I had already forgiven her because it was my will to do so.
It didn’t matter how I felt and it doesn’t matter how you feel either. As Christians, we don’t live by feelings but by faith. Forgive by an act of your will, in time your feelings will line up with your decision. If you have allowed yourself to harbor anger, unforgiveness and bitterness it may take some time to feel it. Be patient with yourself and stand firm on your forgiveness. If bad thoughts continue to come about that person, say; no I have forgiven him. Confess your forgiveness to God as many times as it takes. If you want or need to, tell the person you have forgiven him, even if he does not ask for your forgiveness.
Sample prayer of freedom: Father I confess to you today that I forgive ________ for the sins he committed against me. I ask you to forgive him as well and bless his life. Lord I ask you to reveal to me any demons that have been able to take advantage of me due to this sin ______ committed against me. Spirit of ________, I command you leave me now in the name of Jesus. I renounce your hold on me; you no longer have any rights to me. Go now in Jesus name! Father I ask you to heal me; body, soul and spirit of all the wounds inflicted by this sin committed against me and by the demons that were loosed on me due to the sin, to the wounds or to the unforgiveness that was in my heart. Thank you Lord. In Jesus name, I pray. Amen
Soul-tie is a term used to describe what is formed in our soul due to relationships that we have with others. Soul-ties are formed from sharing a very private and deep part of ourselves with others, either physically through sexual intercourse or emotionally through a non-physical yet intimate relationship.
A soul-tie can be good if it results from a godly relationship. Good soul-ties add to our life and are helpful. Bad soul-ties on the other hand are not of god and bring bad things to us. Bad soul ties result in bondages. In the cases of abandonment, rejection, abuse, excessive emotional pain or mourning, the door may be open for tormenting spirits. Those spirits can cause a host of the same problems we have discussed already in Pathways to Freedom, but also relationship problems, for example long after a romantic relationship is over one might feel un-whole, or unable to commit to another. He/She may feel unable to give or receive love.
Soul-ties are also formed with friends, as in the case of David and Jonathan in the Bible. Friendships that are godly and good can form a healthy soul-tie. But if betrayal or rejection takes place it can become an unhealthy or harmful soul-tie that may cause problems, for example; ongoing feelings of rejection, loneliness, sadness, depression or an inability to form healthy relationships. Broken friendships from long lasting and deep relationships can be much like a divorce. A healthy time of mourning is expected. But if the mourning persists, soul-ties may need to be broken.
Other examples of good soul-ties are godly family relationships and godly relationships within the body of Christ. Even these good soul-ties can become bad. Of course the best soul-tie we have is the one formed from our relationship with God. That one will never need to be broken!
Broken relationships sample prayer of freedom: Father, I forgive _______ for all the wrongs He did to me. I ask you to forgive him as well and to bless his life. I ask that you forgive me for any wrong I did in that relationship. I give that relationship to you. I close the door on it now in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus I break all soul-ties to _______. I ask you to heal me; body, soul and spirit. Make my soul whole again. I ask you to do the same for ________. In the name of Jesus I command every demon that has gained a hold in my life as a result of this soul-tie to go now in Jesus name. Satan, you have no right to me! Thank you Lord for healing and wholeness. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Unholy sexual relations sample prayer of freedom: Lord I repent of relations I had with _________. I confess to you that it was wrong. Cleanse me from all unrighteousness. Set me free from the soul-tie that was formed to _________. Satan, I renounce your hold on me. You no longer have a right to torment me. I command every demon that has entered me as a result of this sin or soul-tie to leave me now in the name of Jesus. Lord, heal my fragmented soul. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
Pray this prayer inserting the name of every person with whom you have been intimate.
If you are having ongoing problems resulting from past relationships, you may want to pray about and consider getting rid of any thing that ties you to the relationship that went bad in order to aid in breaking the soul-ties.
